How to transfer my Macs data to a new Mac?

I am looking to sell my current Mac book to buy the newer model. I wish to back up my computer so that it can be used on my new one. I believe that the Migration Assistant can transfer data from Mac-to-Mac but I will have the two together as I am selling the first. I plan to back up my current Mac to an external hard drive (not a Time Machine, though). How can i back up my hard drive to an external hard drive and then transfer that to my new Mac Book?

download super duper just search it on the internet. Plug in the external hard drive, and then click transfer and now wait for like 5 hours so it can transfer. And when u get the new laptop download super duper again and plug in the external hard drive and do the opposite this time
