How can I prevent this from happening? I know its hard to keep dust away, but if there any suggestions they will be taken kindly.

My macbook lid is closed with the external monitor plugged in. Everything works fine but I don’t want to leave my computer on all the time…I want it to go to sleep when left idle for a while but the computer keeps running. What can I do about this? I have played around with the energy saving settings a bit but they don’t really do anything when the lid is closed and I am using the external monitor.
